Wilson is the Managing Director of J Fraser and Sons Ltd - Funeral-Link Southland - and is very proud of being a fourth generation family member of Southland’s longest serving funeral home.
He fondly recalls the days when his grandparent’s family home was part of the original funeral premises on the corner of Kelvin and Spey Streets – spending hours at a time exploring the casket-making workshop, and the “yard” where stacked Rimu timbers required 3 months of drying before going through the painstaking process of dressing and shaping and polishing before use as a finished casket.
Wilson joined the family business in 1978, at the age of 24, then completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry in 1979, before gaining qualifications in Embalming, and Funeral Directing in 1982 and 1993 respectively. This resulted in formal membership of the New Zealand Funeral Directors’ Association (FDANZ) as a Registered Funeral Director, as well as membership of the New Zealand Embalmers’ Association (NZEA).
Wilson actively continues his involvement in all aspects of funeral arrangements as well as the embalming procedures. He rates these activities as his most satisfying, because there is no greater calling than to be helping grieving families at a time of their greatest need.
Outside of working hours, Wilson and his wife Gayle enjoy doing things together, like walking, cycling or swimming, or relaxing with friends over a cup of coffee.
Funeral-Link members are in each region throughout New Zealand. They share each others values and are able to support families through the journey of change. see: www.funeral-link.co.nz for your local member.
